ABSTRACT

AIM:To assess the clinical efficacy of 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)and bandage contact lens in the pterygium excision combined with autogenous limbal stem cell transplantation(ALSCT)in treating patients with pterygium.METHODS:Random controlled clinical trial. A total of 71 patients(71 eyes)of pterygium who treated at the department of ophthalmology in Qinhuangdao Haigang Hospital between May 2021 and November 2022 were included. They were divide into three groups, including 23 eyes received pterygium excision combined with ALSCT in group A, 24 eyes that were administered with 5-FU intraoperatively and postoperatively in group B, and 24 eyes that received both bandage contact lens and 5-FU in group C. Furthermore, comfort levels at 1, 3, 7, 14d postoperatively, corneal epithelial healing at 1, 3, 7, 14d and 1mo postoperatively, treatment outcomes and complications at 3~6mo postoperatively were compared among the three groups of patients.RESULTS:The comfort levels at 1, 3 and 7d postoperatively and corneal healing at 1 and 3d postoperatively of the group C were better than those of the groups A and B. There were no statistical significant differences in the comfort levels at 14d after surgery and corneal healing at 14d and 1mo after surgery among the three groups of patients. Over a 3~6mo follow-up period, group A experienced recurrence in 3 eyes, group B had 1 recurrence, while group C had no recurrence. There were no statistically significant differences in complication rates among the three groups of patients.CONCLUSIONS: The application of 5-FU combined with bandage contact lens can enhance postoperative comfort levels, promote corneal epithelial healing, and improve the success rate in pterygium excision combined with ALSCT.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate the efficiency and complications of single lacrimal duct intubation versus annular lacrimal duct intubation with 5-fluorouracil and tobramycin/dexamethasone eye ointment injection in lacrimal duct obstruction treatment.METHODS:A total of 74 patients (92 eyes) with lacrimal duct obstruction who received surgical treatment by Department of Ophthalmology in Qinhuangdao Haigang Hospital were consecutively recruited between August 2015 and September 2016.They were randomly allocated to Group A or Group B.After probing of lacrimal passage, Group A (46 eyes) were treated by using single lacrimal duct intubation.Group B (46 eyes) were treated by using annular lacrimal duct intubation combined with 5-fluorouracil and tobramycin/dexamethasone eye ointment injection.Between the two groups, Mann-Whitney Rank sum test was used to comparing the operative effect, and Chi-square test was used to comparing the occurrence of complications.RESULTS:The cure rate was 61% in Group A and 89% in Group B;the improvement rate was 22% in Group A and 4% in Group B.Group B had better effect and less complications (2 cases) than Group A (8 cases),the differences between the two groups were significantly(P<0.05).CONCLUSION: Compared with single lacrimal duct intubation, annular lacrimal duct intubation combined with 5-fluorouracil and tobramycin/dexamethasone eye ointment injection has better operative effect and less complication in lacrimal duct obstruction treatment.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate the operative effect and time effectiveness of the conventional surgery versus retrograde gas injection under nasal endoscope combined 5-Fluorouracil for lacrimal canalicular rupture. ●METHODS:A total of 67 patients (67 eyes) with lower lacrimal canalicular rupture who received surgical treatment by Department of Ophthalmology in Qinhuangdao Haigang Hospital were consecutively recruited between Jan. 2009 and Dec. 2015. They were randomly divided into Group A or Group B. Group A (33 patients, 33 eyes) were treated by conventional surgery, and Group B ( 34 patients, 34 eyes ) were treated by retrograde gas injection under nasal endoscope combined 5-Fluorouracil. Time for finding out the cute end of the lower lacrimal canaliculus and postoperative effect were recorded. Comparisons between the two groups were done with lndependent sample t-test and Mann-Whitney Rank sum test. ●RESULTS: Time for finding out the cute end of the lower lacrimal canaliculus of Group A was (44. 42±10. 66) min, and the time of Group B was ( 30. 06 ± 6. 21 ) min. There was significant difference between the two groups (t=6. 72, P ●CONCLUSION: Compared with conventional surgery, retrograde gas injection under nasal endoscope combined 5-Fluorouracil for lacrimal canalicular rupture can make the operation time shorter and has better effect.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the nutritional status of maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients and to discuss their reverse epidemiological phenomena, so as to provide evidence for further nutrition intervention strategies. Methods We evaluated the nutritional statuses of 113 MHD patients by combining the subjective global assessment (SGA) score, anthropometrics and biochemical tests. Results According to SGA scores, 63 patients (55.75%) were classified as well nourished, and malnutrition was observed in 50 patients (44.25%), with mild to moderate malnutrition in 45 patients (39.82%) and severe malnutrition in 5 patients (4.42%). The levels of triceps skin fold (TSF), mid-arm circumference (MAC), mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) in malnutrition patients were significantly lower than those in the well-nourished group (P<0.01). The levels of total cholesterol (CH), triacylglycrol (TG), low density lipoprotein(LDL), serum albumin (Alb), prealbumin (PA), serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), calcium(Ca), and phosphorus (P) in malnutrition patients were lower than those in the well-nourished group(the differences for TG, PA, Scr, and BUN being statistically significant, P<0.05,P<0.01); the levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were higher than those in the well-nourished group, but showing no statistical significance. Conclusion Malnutrition is common in the maintenance hemodialysis patients, which is one of the reasons for the reverse epidemiological phenomena, so it is suggested that the treatment should be adjusted according to the specific pathophysiological characteristics of MHD patients.
